Synopsis for fifth business

Fifth Business

Author: Robertson Davies

Setting: Deptford Canada, Europe, other places in Canada

Plot:  An old man has retired and feels that his retirement party and the offerings of him poorly reflect him as a person and his work. His story begins when he was a little boy in Deptford. His friend throws a snowball at him. He ducks it and it hits a pregnant woman, Mary Dempster, she than goes into labor. Paul is very premature and Mary had a very difficult birth. However booth survives by some miracle. Ramsy has to care for Mrs. Dempster. He begins to fall in love with her, much to display of his mother and his classmates.  His classmates begin to distance themselves from him. Eventually Mrs. Dempster has sex with a tramp. She reforms him, which Dunny later sees as a miracle. Dunny’s older brother falls ill and dies. He runs and gets Mary. She prays over him and saves him. This is seen as her scond miracle. He soon joins the army to escape the embarrassment of Mrs. Demptser. While there he shoots out a tank nest. During this incident he loses his legs. He also sees a sculpture of the virgin Mary.  He sees Mary Dempster. He views this as her third miracle. He loses conscsness and when he wakes up he is the hospital where he meets Diana. He learns that his parents have died and his brother had died. He also wins a V.C.  Dunstan returns to Canada and becomes a scholar. He learns of fool-saints and of Percy boys marriage to a girl he liked. He travles to Europe with Leola and Boy  mostly for the ride. Their he runs into some Jesuits, and he makes friends with one of them. He becomes an expert in saints. He returns to Deptford to find Mary. Soon the depression hits. Boy becomes very wealthy. Dunny goes to see Mary almost every day. Leisel soon dies of pneumonia and Dunny suspects that she had something to do with her own death.   Dunny soon goes to a magic show in Mexico show. There he discovers that Paul dempster is the Magician. Here he meets Liesel.  Who is ugly but is wise. One night he sees Lesiel and a girl that he finds to be attractive kissing. Liesiel comes to his room which makes him mad, he then brutally attcks her. She later tells him that she wanted to relive his anger. He returns to Canada and tells May he has found Paul. She suffers severe trauma. She later dies from this. Soon Paul comes to Canada. Dunny introduces Paul to boy. Then shows them the rock that caused Mary to go into labor. After both men leave Dunny realizes that the stone is gone. He goes to Paul’s show. Someone comes in and says that Boy is dead. No one knows who killed him. Then Dunny has a heart attack.

Characters

Dunny- The main character. Never really does anything for himself. Is fifth business. Dunny is just a player in other peoples game. Carries the weight of the world on his shoulders.

Boy- Throws the rock that ruined Mary.  He is from a wealthy family and becomes very wealthy. He marries Leola, but I am not positive that he really loved her. In the end he is either murdered or he commits suicide.

Paul- Is much younger than Dunny is. He becomes a talented magician. Possibly kills Boy.

Mary- Paul’s mother. Dunny’s  fool saint. Her three miracles are reforming the tramp, saving Dunny’s brother and appearing to Dunny as the virgin Mary.

Liesiel – is Paul’s assistant is extermly ugly but is wise beyond her years.

Point of view- Ramsy is his own story teller. He is of course bias but he seems to bias against himself in a way. I don’t think he is very reliable. He has lots of emotion and views himself negatvly.

Tone- Ramsy accepts himself as fifth business. Ramsy os negative and thoughtful of his past.

Imagery- There is lots of imagery. A very good image is when Boy throws the snowball. You can feel the terror. You can see the snowball being thrown. You can feel the tensions.

Symbolism- This is hard because I have not done a second read. The stone is  possibly a symbol for the beginning and end.

Memorable quotes

“He was killed by the usual cabal: by himself, first of all; by the women he knew ; by the women he did not know ; by the man who granted his inmost  wish ; and by the inevitable fifth who was the keeper of his conscience and keeper of the stone.”  This is important because it simplifies the human to condtion to five people. You could probably write an entire essay just on this one quote.

“In making this report to you, my dear Headmaster, I have purposely begun with the birth of Paul Dempster, because this is the cause of so much that is to follow.” This is important because it shows him blaming basically his life on Paul’s birth. It may also illustrate that humans make their situation what they want.

Theme:

Humanity is the author of its own story.

How we know: Throughout the novel  Dunny argues that your role is relevant to your perspective and because Humans often contribute miracles to God but they often come from the human Psyche.

synopsis of American Dream

American Dream

Author: Edward Elbee

Setting: in some apartment in some none descript suburban place. Probably in the 195os or 60s.

Plot: At the opening of the play Mommy and Daddy are complaining about how they are late. Mommy begins to recount how she almost bought a beige hat but was stopped by the leader of her women’s club and was informed that it was in fact a wheat color hat. Mommy and the women get into a frugal argument about the real color of the hat. Mommy says she cannot get satisfaction. At this point Grandma comes in with wrapped boxes. Grandma complains about being old. At this point we find out that Grandma and Mommy were very poor. Because Mommy married Daddy she is now rich. At this point Grandma tells about how Mommy and Daddy murdered their adoptive son’ who happened to be a twin. At this point the other twin comes in.  Mommy suggests incest and Grandma quickly ends the play.

I need to make a note about the relationship of Mommy and Daddy, Although Daddy makes the money Mommy seems to control the household and the pocketbook. This is swapping of the traditional roles of the women and the man.

Mommy- Controls the pocketbook controls the household. Grew up poor her mother implies that she Married Daddy for his money and not because she loved him.  Perhaps is a gold digger

Daddy- has become DE masculinized booth literally and fugitively. Obviously has a lot of money but does not have much ambition.  Mommy controls his ambitions.  I think he loves Mommy in a strange and unique way.

Grandma- is the only with any hope of sanity. She is a really actress because she pretends to be insane. She is also afraid that she will be kicked out and forced to live in an old folks home. She also complains a lot about being old.

Mrs.Barker-is the  leader of Mommy’s women’s club. She is also the head of the adoption agency. She is not very observant because she has allowed Mommy and Daddy to adopt another child even after they have killed their son. She is very busy.

The young man- Mommy and Daddy killed his twin. Since then he has been stripped of his emotions and cannot feel anything.

Point of view- The narrator is Grandma.  While she is the most reliable character she has a very strong bias against her own daughter. She is somewhat unreliable

Tone- Grandma is angry and frustrated at Mommy and the way her life has turned out.

Imagery- One very strong image is the image of Mommy buying her hat. Another image is of Grandma packing her stuff

Symbolism- Ok. Sparknotes says there is no symbols however I disagree. I think that Grandma is a symbol of old ways. I think that Mommy is a symbol of the new feminine. I think the boxes are a symbol of the American Dream.

Memorable quotes

“I no longer have the capacity to feel anything. I have no emotions. I have been drained, torn asunder disemboweled. I have, now, only my person, my body, my face. I use what I have I let people love me I accept the syntax around me, for while I know I cannot relate; I know I must be related to.” This is a quote from the young man. This is literally about the American dream but it is a bring down of the new dream.

“WHAT a masculine Daddy! Isn't he a masculine Daddy?” This is ironic because this statement comes when Daddy is following one of the countless orders from Mommy and actually demonstrates how little of a “man” he really is.

Theme

The theme is that the American dream is absurd.

How we know: Title is American dream. Mommy and Daddy strive to accomplish this ridiculous dream and end up miserable.

Synopsis Ceremony

Ceremony

Author: Leslie Marmon Silko

Setting: Laguna settlement, outside Laguna settlement, Japan, directly after WW2

He is also suffering from severe PTSD because he was a POW and because he witnessed his cousin brother’s death. Upon returning he also has discovered that his uncle father has died in a mysterious way probably related to dehydration or overworking or stress or a combination.  Tayo is also suffering from Malaria.  All the native Americans on the reservation are dealing with severe Alcoholism. This creates many problems and conflicts. Tayo stabs Emo and then spends some time in a mental facility, While Emo spends time in jail. When Tayo comes back he meets a new medicine man named Betonie. Betonie convinces him that he has to make his own ceremonies. So Tayo sets out to create his own ceremonies. While this is going on Emo is growing angrier and angrier. Emo trys to murder Tayo but Pinkie messes up. Emo then kills Pinkey. Emo escapes to California and is eventually caught.  Tayo meanwhile meets Ts’eh. She teaches him the way of thand the world and about the old traditions. After this the world seems at peace. * Tayo was raised by his Aunt and so his cousin is basically his brother. His uncle was like a father to him

Characters

Tayo- The main protagonist. He Suffers from PTD, alcoholism, Malaria. Bames himself for the drought. He  is caught between white world and Native American world. He is also racist.

Auntie- raised Tayo. Devout Christian

Ts’eh- teaches him the old ways

Betonie- Says that we have to make our own ceremonies instead of trying to fit into someone else’s. He is a bit taboo.

Robert- Uncle , died in a mysterious way. Drives Tayo’s mentall instability

Rocky- Tayo’s cousin , dies as a POW, drives Tayo’s mental instability.

Point of View- The narration is in third person. It is omniscient and fairly reliable.

Tone- The narrator is upset. The narrator feels conflicted between two worlds.

Imagery- There are several images in this novel. There are several images about the jungle. You can feel the rain and you can hear the rain. Here are images about the drought. You can feel the dryness in your throat and the sand blowing around biting your skin and eyes.

Symbolism-The Gallup Ceremony is a very good symbol of booth how the whites misunderstand the natives and how the natives misunderstand the whites.

Memorable quotes

“Jungle rain had no beginning or end; it grew like foliage from the sky, branching and arching to the earth, sometimes in solid thickets entangling the islands, and, other times, in tendrils of blue mist curling out of coastal clouds. The jungle breathed an eternal green that fevered men until they dripped sweat the way rubbery jungle leaves dripped the monsoon rain. It was there that Tayo began to understand what Josiah had said. Nothing was all good or all bad either; it all depended.” This quote is a really good description of how Tayo felt in the Jungle.

“Old Grandma shook her head slowly, and closed her cloudy eyes again. "I guess I must be getting old, " she said, "because these goings-on around Laguna don't get me excited anymore." She sighed, and laid her head back on the chair. "It seems like I already heard these stories before—only thing is, the names sound different." This is the closing of the book. It shows how the human condition is always the same and just continues the same cycles over and over again.

Theme

We have to make our own “ceremonies” or else we will just fit ourselves into the old cycles and we will not be happy.

How we know: Bettonie instructs Tayo to find his own way, this is how he finds peace also Old Grandma says “It seems like I already heard these stories before—only thing is, the names sound different."

synopsis of Hamlet

Hamlet

Author: Shakespeare

Setting : Elsinore Denmark

Plot: Check this very helpful Sparknotes video http://www.sparknotes.com/sparknotes/video/hamlet  Hamlet is a young man who is returning to Elsinore from college in Germany. He is returning because his father has died and his mother has gotten married. She has married Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle. Hamlet of course feels betrayed by this action. Hamlet learns, from his father’s ghost that Claudius murdered him and Hamlet is instructed to murder Claudius. Hamlet does not fulfill this filial duty until the very end of the play. Throughout the entire play we question who Hamlet really is. We also question who is really on Hamlet’s side and who is against him. I am not really sure about the meaning of this play.

Significant characters

Hamlet- Hamlet is very complicated. There is always more to him than meets the eye.  He is the prince of Elsinore. At the start of the play he is a moody 30 something home from college.  He is the first to find out what happened to his father and vows to kill Claudius.

Gertrude- She is Hamlet’s mother, Claudius’ wife, Hamlet SR.’s wife. It is unclear whether she loves Claudius but it is pretty unclear she did not love Hamlet sr. It is also unclear whether or not she had a hand in her husband’s death.

Claudius- Claudius murdered his brother either for the love of Gertrude or the more probable he murdered him to get the crown. Claudius has little sympathy. He is also greedy.

The ghost- The ghost appears to Hamlet and really gets the ball rolling as far as the action goes.

Horatio-Hamlet’s closest college friend. In the end he is the only friend Hamlet has

Ophelia- denies Hamlet and this drives over the edge because he feels he is loosing all of his support system

Point of view- There isn’t really a person telling the story. The audience gets most of the news as Hamlet gets the news.

Tone-  This is really hard to peg.  The tone could be angry. The tone could be reminiscent.

Imagery- You get a good image of the ghost. You can really feel the chill of the ghost. Another image is the feelings between Hamlet and Ophelia, Hamlet and his mother and Gertrude and Claudius.

Symbolism- There is not a lot of physical symbols in this show. One really important symbol is the skulls. The skulls represent the coming death and Hamlet’s realization of his own mortality.

Memorable quotes

“That it should come to this!
But two months dead!—nay, not so much, not two:
So excellent a king; that was, to this,
Hyperion to a satyr; so loving to my mother,
That he might not beteem the winds of heaven
Visit her face too roughly. Heaven and earth!
Must I remember? Why, she would hang on him
As if increase of appetite had grown
By what it fed on:”  This shows how high of a platform Hamlet gives to his father. He ignores what his mother wants, what Claudius and even a little of what he wants. Hamlet is very childish.

“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.”  This is showing how wrong everything has gone since Hamlet Sr. has died.

Theme

The theme is that the future is never certain.

How we know: Hamlet doesn’t know what is going to happen, he doesn’t know what is going to happen. Also the multiple deaths that happen at the end are definitely unexpected.

Synopsis Death of a Salesman

 Death of a Salesman

Author: Arthur Miller

Setting:  Some suburban city, somewhere near NYC probably in the 1970s or 80s.

Plot: After a failed sales trip Willy has returned home where his wife, Linda has been waiting for him. She persuades him to talk to his boss about working in New York so he won’t have to travel. Willy is critical of his son Biff and Linda scolds him. Linda convinces Biff to go to a job interview. Willy reflects upon his life with Biff.  We found out that Biff had been a big football star. He sees his brothers  ghost and we find out that he went west and became successful. The next day Biff goes to his job interview but he ends up stealing from the company. Here we find out that Biff is a kleptomaniac. He tells his father that he steals because he feels he has no other choice and because his father puffed him up to that.   His father gets fired and goes to his friend’s son Bernard. We discover that Bernard has been giving Willy monthly stipends. This is a time when we discover that Willy may not have been as successful as he thinks. Willy and Biff take their father to a bar. Here he find out that Hap has been stealing fiancée. At this point the boys leave and Willy is left to reflect on his life. We find out that Willy has had an affair. The guilt of this and not being able to provide for his family drive Willy to his eventual suicide.

Significant characters

Willy- The central character, is a failed salesperson. Also cannot get over the notion that real work is sealing things and that working with your hands means you are not successful.

Biff- Knows who wants to be but struggles to overcome his father’s ideas.

Hap- The second ignored son, steals fiancées because he has no other means of attention getting,

Linda- is Willy’s wife but is treated more like his mother.  She loves and cares for Willy and her sons but she loves them like her sons.

Bernard- While secondary he supports the family, without them knowing it.

Ben- Willy’s older brother.  Ben is why Willy struggles with his fate so much.

Point of View- This is in third person. The narrator is omniscient. I believe you are supposed to be viewing this play as a neighbor or someone that is an outsider to Willy’s life.  The narrator is mostly reliable.

Tone-The Narrator is angry and perhaps a little pensive.

Imagery- Some important images are, Obviously the Death of Willy, Also the image of the perfect family and the perfect man.

Symbolism- There are many symbols in this book. One very important one is the family house. As the house falls apart so does Willy and so does the Loman’s marriage. Also as the truck gets forgotten so are Biff and Hap.

Memorable quotes

“I saw the things that I love in this world. The work and the food and the time to sit and smoke. And I looked at the pen and I thought, what the hell am I grabbing this for? Why am I trying to become what I don’t want to be . . . when all I want is out there, waiting for me the minute I say I know who I am.”  This is an example of Biff wondering if he should conform to his Dad’s ideas. This is one place where Biff’s ideas win out. After this he is happier than when he was following his Dad’s idea.

“ A diamond is hard and rough to the touch” This is an instant when Willy struggles with his fate. His brother was clearly successful and he wonders why he can’t be.

Theme

This book is about how capitalism is bad and Miller proves this by arguing that children should not blindly accept their parents believe, and that you have to set your own fate.

How we know: Willy blindly follows and commits suicide, Hap struggles for attention and Biff ends up happier than both his father and his brother.

synopsis PandP

Pride and Prejudice

Author:  Jane Austin

Setting: Neitherfield, England

Plot: The Bennetts who have five unmarried daughters hear that Mr. Bingley is moving into Nietherfield park Mansion.  This is a great cause of excitement as the Bennett property has been enwalled. Also Mrs. Bennett is desperate to see her daughters married. Then there is a dance. At this dance Mr. Bingley brings his friend Mr. Darcy. While Bingley falls for the oldest daughter Jane, Darcy sees Lizzy, the second daughter.  At first he rejects her because she is a lower class citizen. However he soon begins to fall for her.  After a brief illness Mr. Collins comes to court the girls. He eventually purposes to Elizabeth but she refuses him.  We later find out that Mr. Collins marries Lizzy’s best friend Charlotte. Soon a regiment comes to a nearby village. Lydia gets permission to go and stay at an old colonial’s house where she meets Mr. Wickham. She eventually runs away with him.  Mr. Darcy finds out and pays him to marry Lydia.  When Elizabeth sees this she realizes how wonderful he is. In the end Jane marries Bingley and Elizabeth marries Darcy.

Significant Characters

Elizabeth: Strong , independent , eventually marries Darcy

Darcy: Confident sometimes a little to confident. At first seen as arrogant

Jane: Quiet, “proper” women. Eventually marries Bingley

Mr. Bingley: proper, is easily influenced by Darcy, Marries Jane

Lydia: Slut. Runs away and marries Wickham. She is easily influenced by her overbearing mother.

Point of View:  This is told in third person.  The narrator is omniscient. The narrator is reliable.

Imagery: Once Jane gets sick. Austin does a very good job of describing how Elizabeth gets there and describing what she looks like when she got there. She also does a good showing the Bingley sisters disgust. You can really feel for Elizabeth.

tone: the voice is hopeful

Symbolism: This book is relatively free of symbolism. Perhaps this is because of the amount of dialogue.  One very clear one though is Darcy’s house. Everything about it is a symbol. The river is a direct symbol of Darcy it is not adorned unnecessarily. The house itself is a symbol of Lizzy’s love. Her love for the  house grows as her love for him grows.

Memorable quotes

“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” This is the opening line of the novel. This is part of the reason why Mrs. Darcy is so marriage happy.

“Which do you mean?” and turning round, he looked for a moment at Elizabeth, till catching her eye, he withdrew his own and coldly said, “She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me; and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men. You had better return to your partner and enjoy her smiles, for you are wasting your time with me.” This is how Darcy first views Elizabeth. Perhaps this would be a good quote to use if you wanted to show that people often change because he ends up marring Elizabeth.

Theme

The message is You should be independent but still follow the rules of society. In this case women should get married.

How I know: Elizabeth has lots of opportunities to marry but she refuses. She thinks for herself and ends up marring Darcy and being much better off than her sisters or her friends. However the feminist in me wonders if she really ends up independent because she still gets married and does not really end “independent”.
