response to class materials October 9

We began learning about DIDLS. This stands for diction, imagery, details, language and syntax. These are literary           devices. I find that the hardest one is syntax. I think that it is probably because in past English classes we have not really talked about syntax.  We also talked about how to write a good thesis.  Because of Debate I feel that writing a good thesis is not to much of a problem. However I tend to be wordy with introductions and it was helpful to talk about how to write a good but short introduction.
In AP English we recently did our first read of Edward Albee's " American Dream". I feel as if the entire play was about the inability to get "satisfaction". so to speak. I did not really  care for this play and I defiantly would not pay to see it(Unless of  course one of my very good friends was in it). The play made me feel uncomfortable. In my opinion Albee uses the young man who is described as " the American Dream" to show that the American Dream is actually unobtainable because perfection is unobtainable.
I have enjoyed being in AP Lit. I like to read and I enjoy my classmates.

  1. I agree, syntax is tough to understand. Do you feel like you've grasped the concept now that we've worked with it so much? I also think you meant "definitely" and instead you wrote "defiantly". Always double check your work!

  2. I like how you mentioned the literary techniques that we learned in class, but have you found them useful? Do you usually use them in your writing? I also found that our work with introduction and thesis writing was helpful. Do you recognize the DIDLS techniques in The American Dream? Also, why does the play make you feel uncomfortable? I hope you enjoy the next play better!

  3. I think that the reason qhy we're all so totally not competent with syntax is because of the fact that our previous teachers barely ever touched on it. I mean, i don't know about you but my teachers would be happy if we could pick out diction and imagery let alone touch on commands, sentence structures that comes with syntax.
The American Dream was funny and a totally new experience for me, i didn't find it uncomfortable, some of Albee's views are different from mine but those are his words and even if i disagree with him, i have agreed to disagree so it doesn't bother me.
