response to class materials October 23

We have almost finished our closed reading of Albee's play The American dream. We looked at why Albee uses the pronoun "they" as frequently as he does. We compared what it means to be in artificial light verse what it means to be in natural light. I think many upper middle class people create artificial light, so they can appear to be more upper class, just as Mommy did. Many teenagers also create an artificial light because they want to be accepted.
I am really glad that we are almost finish with this play. It made feel uncomfortable and I really did not enjoy it to much. I am looking forward to beginning Death of a salesmen.

  1. Why didn't you enjoy Albee's play? I agree, it made me uncomfortable too at times, but I think you should look at the metaphors that Albee incorporated in his work.

  2. In general, do you appreciate absurdest plays? I can understand why you did not like this play, but as Alina said, the meaning behind it is quite powerful. It was hard for me to like at first because I could not relate to any of the characters, but then I realized that we were not supposed to relate to the characters like how we would with other stories.

  3. You shouldn't be uncomfortable with a play simply because it disagrees with your opinions if thats whats making you uncomfortable with it. Another downside to Albee, unlike DOS, is that it lacks a sort of emotional connection that DOS, Albee treats his play like its one big joke with underlying motives. I feel sometimes that Albee detracts from emotionally connecting with the audience through his book for a reason, although i can't pinpoint exactly where he's going with it.
